Here We Go Again!

IMG_4776[1] You may be wondering why I have posted this photo. These are Omega 3 supplements. They contain fish oil, flaxseed oil, safflower oil, soybean oil and olive oil. Supposedly these oils are good for heart and cardiovascular health. I have a history of heart disease in my family, so I’m very conscious of trying to do the right things to keep my heart healthy.

Recently I convinced my husband that he should take the Omega 3 supplements, too. Now we find out that a study shows that Omega 3s may result in a higher risk of prostate cancer. So what should a person do?

I’m a small woman and more prone to osteoporosis, so I’ve been taking calcium supplements to strengthen my bones. Now I hear that too much calcium can be bad for your heart. I cut back to 1 table a day versus 2 tablets, which is the recommended daily dose. This kind of stuff seems to happen all too frequently these days. First, coffee is bad for you. Now it’s okay. Eggs were bad. Now they are good. Talk about junk science. Who are we to believe?

What do you think about these studies?

im not sure what to think any more ,my dad was a dairy farmer, he worked hard and ate eggs fried potatoes gravy everthing the dr told him when he got diabeties he could no lokger have so i cut them all out for him, did he get better no he got worse, so again i just dont know what to believe

    • Shirley, it is confusing. Sometimes, I wish they would just quit with the studies. I’m sure a lot of stuff depends on our own genetic makeup. Some folks can eat all kinds of stuff that supposedly isn’t good for you and live long, long lives. Others try to eat healthy and die young. Both my parents and two of my brothers have had heart problems, not to mention aunts and uncles on both sides of my family. My theory is everything in moderation. 🙂

Merrillee, I agree… gets confusing! I have always believed in supplements and do take them. I am a senior citizen and had great health until a year ago when I got this pain in hips/back and now I have to get injections (not helping enough yet). I can tolerate the flax better than fish oil; my dh takes the fish oil…he is a heart patient and diabetic and they have helped him tremendously. His doctors approve them. The fish oil did wonders for him by lowering his triglycerides….preventing take another drug.

    • Jackie, I saw a program on TV this morning while I was getting ready for church where two doctors were talking about this study. They said you should just be wise about the dosage. Don’t take too much.

I don’t know what to think about these studies either. First they say something is good for you and then they say oh no that isn’t good for you. My husband takes the Omega 3 supplement and when he saw the Dr. this year for his annual exam, he got an excellent report. We take the Omega 3,6, & 9 verses just the Omega 3. A co-worker recently told me that they read somewhere that if you leave the Omega 3 in the freezer and take it frozen that you won’t be tasting fish from it. I haven’t tried it yet but she said it works so I may try it. I don’t take it as often as I should because of that. It is worth a try to see if it works. I too have a history of heart disease in my family.

I take fish oil and flaxseed oil everyday for my eyes. I had cataract surgery two years ago ( I just turned 50 on July 25th) and the fish and flaxseed oil helps. So not only is it good for your heart , it is also good for your eyes!
