Fun Work

This past Saturday and Monday (Sunday was too cold for this project), I spent a good part of the day power washing all the concrete areas around our house, including two driveways and the sidewalks. Here’s a photo of our trusty power washer.

In Florida, we have lots of mold and mildew that collects everywhere. Periodically, we have to remove it. One of the best tools for doing so is a power washer. I don’t know how this machine works, but water goes through the lines and out a nozzle with tremendous force and removes dirt, grime, mold and mildew. It can even remove paint. So you have to be careful where you aim that nozzle. Power washing is almost a mindless task, but I love seeing the mold and mildew disappear. I have a supreme sense of accomplishment when I am finished. To give you an idea about the project the photo below shows part of the drive that is partially clean.

You can see the clean portion and how dirty the drive is before I use the power washer on it. Here are some photos of the finished project.

Seeing the clean driveway reminds me of how God through Jesus Christ, wipes our sins away.

1 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV) “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.”

Is there a cleaning project that you like to do?

I would like to start cleaning inside my house, starting with my kitchen. I would actually like to clean each room and whatever we aren’t using, get rid of it. That is hard for me to do sometimes though. Later on when the weather gets warmer I want to take a few days off from work and open the windows, clean and enjoy the fresh air. We had six inches of snow yesterday. A lot of it melted today but tomorrow the temperatures are supposed to be 60 which is nice but I want it to be warmer before I start opening windows.

    • Mary, cleaning house is a chore to me. I’m like you. I have a hard time getting rid of things. And we’ve certainly had some crazy weather lately. It’s so sad what happens with those terrible storms. Whenever I see the news stories about tornadoes, I think of my book Mommy’s Hometown Hero. There is a tornado in that book.

I love being outside and working in my yard and flower gardens. I have 10 rose trees, and about 100 daylillies, and about 400 tulips, in addition to many green plants. There is something therapeutic about getting your hands dirty, and then watching all the beautiful flowers bloom.

    • Sheila, it sounds as though you have a beautiful yard. We used to have day lilies in our yard in Illinois. I have some other kind of lily in my yard now. They are in desperate need of being separated. I’ve already done it once since they were planted, but they keep spreading. Being in the south, I miss tulips. It doesn’t get cold enough hear to grow them. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

I love to clean the house. I really do. There’s not a single chore I don’t like to do.

I think my love for it (and you can see me eager for Saturday, on Friday, because I’ll dedicate the day cleaning my home) comes from two aspects:

    – I was raised to be a housewife so started learning and enjoying everything about it – from the “heavy” Spring Cleaning to the normal washing the dishes;

    – I see my house chore as an extension of myself. I bother with me and I bother with other aspects of me: my family, my home, my friends and I care for everything.

So instead of a chore it’s just another think I do to feel good and happy and settled.

But you give me the outdoors to clean – I use a similar machine to yours, Merrilllee – and I’m 5 again. Water, Sun and Nature… Not enough days to dedicate to our things I think.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t like to be a housewife… I wouldn’t like to work from home, so I guess I’m lucky as I enjoy every aspect of my life.

    • Teresa, how wonderful that you love to keep your house. It is not one of my favorite things to do, but I do enjoy it when it is clean. You are right about not having enough days to do things. Thanks for your support.

I have a white kitchen sink. It doesn’t take much to stain it, so I get great satisfaction when I get it clean.
I also enjoy doing laundry. When I have a laundry room with no dirty clothes, I feel a sense of accomplishment.
I clean my house, but only because that’s the only way it’ll get clean.
    Your driveway looks great!

    • Jackie, thanks for stopping by my blog. You’re the first person I’ve heard who likes to do laundry. I know what you mean about the kitchen sink. I also have a white sink. In fact, it needs to be cleaned. You’ve inspired me. 🙂

I say forget the power washer, I want to see what your yard looks like. … So that’s what grass looks like in March, eh. Interesting. 😀

I don’t like to start cleaning, but once started and I see results, I don’t want to stop.

    • Anita, good to see you here. Stay tuned. In the next couple of days I’ll be posting some photos of my yard. The azaleas are almost in full bloom, but of course, all the flowers make for lots of pollen. My eyes burn when I spend a lot of time outside, but I still love being outdoors.

When I was growing up, I loved cleaning the house. I didn’t mind sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, rearranging, or whatever needed done. Now days it is much harder. Living in the same place all our married life I have collected too many things. That and the fact our house is small makes it harder to clean throughout. My mom had told me it is much harder to keep up a small house than a large one. Small houses look cluttered with one thing out of place but a large house, the out of place item might not even be noticed. Oh. Back to cleaning projects: I love it when I have been catching up in the kitchen and the finishing project is mopping the floor. That is the final chore to a job well done.

I enjoy doing the dishes..I can look out my window and see the flowers in my window box and I never minded ironing….in fact I would rather iron all day than clean the bathtub.

Haven’t done my spring cleaning yet. Have to get taxes finished first. I would rather be reading than doing those 2 chores.

I enjoy doing laundry from the sorting of colors to the folding of clothes from the dryer. Of course we have a small family so it would be different if we had a larger family. I also enjoy clearing a cluttered table. In fact I have one that needs clearing now! It is a challenge and a puzzle to solve to find a place for everything that accumulates on the table.

I enjoy emptying the dishwasher, filling the recycle bin, and ironing my son’s clothes for resale at the kid’s consignment sale. It does give me a sense of accomplishment.
I also have a kitchen nook table that attracts clutter! Somehow things migrate naturally there, since we spend so much time there doing crafts, talking, reading, opening mail, etc.
My taxes are done, but that is why I married an Accounting Major! He always does them! 😉
Yes, I would rather be reading too!

    • Susan, I think we all have a place in our houses that tends to collect clutter. Unfortunately in my house, there seem to be several places–the washer and dryer right next to the door where we come into the house from the garage, the desk in the kitchen and the ottoman in front of the TV room couch. About once a week I have to stop and get rid of the stuff that’s been collecting there.

We actually had little side jobs presherwashing driveways and houses..although the drought several years ago made us stop and we ended up selling our pressurewasher 🙁 I am really wishing we still had it lol

    • Angel, there are lots of people who do pressure washing around here because every couple of years most people have to have their houses pressure washed. Even though we have a pressure washer, we hired someone to do our house the last two times because we just didn’t have time.
